Iomega Support And Downloads
I am running Mint 17.3 XFCE on my Samsung laptop. I have a couple of portable external hard drives (one Toshiba, one Iomega, both USB2 and each 320GB) more or less permanently plugged in. One has my music, the other my photos and archived documents. All works well. The problem I now have isn't, strictly, a 'Mint' problem, or even Linux related. It's about another hard drive.
As I was planning to do some backing up and other stuff, I have just plugged in another Iomega Prestige USB2 320GB portable drive - the same model and vintage as the one I have been using for ages. Brand new and unused, it has been sitting in its box since I bought it years ago.
The computer didn't 'recognise' it. The little light illuminated (showing it is getting power). But it didn't mount automatically (as other USB drives do as soon as they are plugged in). It doesn't show in the Thunar file manager. Nor does it show in the Disk Manager.
My Iomega Hard Drive Is Not Detected Connected
So I tried plugging the drive into an old Windows XP laptop that I still use occasionally. Even worse. The power light illuminated OK. The computer initially said 'Found New Hardware' and then 'The device is ready for use'. But the drive didn't show up in 'My Computer'; nor when I looked via Properties>Hardware>Device Manager. I even tried to look for it using the Windows TweakUI tool, which normally lists all drives. Again, nothing. The worse problem was that the XP computer then froze, or hung, and I had a bit of a struggle to get it to shut down.
It's both puzzling and annoying, as this portable drive - although an old model - is brand new out of the box. Is it just a dead device? There's obviously no prospect of return or refund ... I actually think Iomega have ceased producing portable drives and may even have gone out of business. But is there any other way I can try to get this drive to function? I have no use for a paperweight!
